Course overview

For any nation, traditional festivals are an important cultural heritage that embodies rich national cultural emotions and values.

 

The construction of this course is in line with Shanghai International Studies University’s new measures for teaching reform-building a characteristic ideological and political (moral education) system in foreign language schools, innovating ideological and political teaching methods, and promoting the integration of professional (foreign language) teaching and ideological and political education. The language tells about Chinese traditional festivals and their cultural connotations, helps contemporary college students to strengthen their recognition of the traditional culture of the motherland, pays attention to the inheritance of traditional festival culture, and at the same time, increases their own ability to spread Chinese culture.

 

The course will cover the eight major festivals in China: Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, Qingming Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Tanabata, Mid-Autumn Festival, Double Ninth Festival, National Day. It will describe the origin, characteristics and customs of each festival, and emphasize the core values of the Chinese nation presented in each festival, such as people and Harmony of nature, harmony between people, Chinese people’s family outlook, Chinese people’s "filial piety", patriotism and selfless altruism.
